ANIMAL CARE LEVEL 3

This course would suit you if you are working in a supervisory/managerial capacity within the animal care industry.

What will I study?

The Level 3 qualification is aimed at students who are working in a supervisory/managerial capacity within the animal care industry, working in kennels, catteries, animal shelters etc. Throughout this course you will develop your practical skills in animal care and build on the background knowledge you possess.

What modules are covered?

The Mandatory Units for study are:

  • Implement, monitor & evaluate plans for the health & welfare of animals
  • Promote, monitor & maintain health, safety & security of the workplace
  • Plan the handling & restraint of animals
  • Plan, supervise & control the movement of animals
  • Plan the accommodation of animals
  • Monitor & evaluate the accommodation of animals

Students must also achieve either:

  • Plan diets & feeding regimes for animals
  • Monitor & evaluate the feeding of animals

Or

  • Load and unload animals for transportation
  • Establish animals in a new environment

In addition to the mandatory units students may choose from the following units:

  • Promote & maintain the health & well-being of animals
  • Welcome, reveive and care for visitors to sites
  • Handle animals to enable them to work effectively
  • Care for animals after they have worked
  • Provide advice & guidance on the choice & care of animals to prospective keepers
  • Assess the suitability of new environments for the placement of animals
  • Plan the establishment & management of wild animal populations
  • Monitor & evaluate the establishment & management of wild animal populations
  • Provide information on how to maintain the behaviour, health & welfare of animals
  • Recognise & interpret the behaviour of animals
  • Contribute to the prevention of aggressive & abusive behaviour of people
  • Contribute to managing aggressive and abusive behaviour of people
  • Sell over the counter medicines and treatments for the care of animals



  • Provide information to customers seeking advice about symptoms and over the counter medications for the care of animals
  • Evaluate the match between individuals & animals
  • Design integrated training programmes for people & animals to realise their combined potential
  • Implement integrated training programmes for individuals & animals to realise the agreed outcomes.
  • Evaluate integrated training programmes for people and animals agreed outcome
  • Plan and prepare to release native animals into natural habitats
  • Prepare and construct new structures or surfaces
  • Handle animals
  • Select and prepare animals for breedingManage the care of young animals
  • Select animals for training
  • Design individual training programmes for animals
  • Implement individual training programmes for animals
  • Evaluate and improve training programmes which enable animals to achieve specific objectives
  • Prepare for transportation of animals
  • Maintain the health & welfare of animals during transportation
  • Plan, monitor and evaluate the transportation of animals
  • Determine and agree policies for the management of animals
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of animal management policies
  • Encourage and motivate volunteers
  • Manage the work of volunteers
  • Prepare and maintain the operational condition of workboats
  • Operate work boats
  • Prepare interpretive entertainment and educational activities
  • Devlier and evaluate interpretive entertainment and educational activities
  • Organise the receipt and storage of goods in a retail environment
  • Help customers to choose products in a retail environment
  • Maintain the availability of goods for sale to customers in a retail environment
  • Evaluate the receipt of payments from customers
  • Improve the customer relationship
  • Work with others to improve customer service
