ANIMAL CARE LEVEL 2

This course would suit you if you want to work in the animal care industry and you want to develop practical skills in animal care.

 

WHAT WILL I STUDY

There are three key areas of study, Core Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours. You will study these plus choose a specific pathway depending on your job role and interests. You will also complete a portfolio, complete Level 1 functional skills in English and Maths (unless exempt) or Level 2 functional skills tests in English and Maths (unless exempt)

Knowledge

You learn about Legislation, Health & Safety, Maintenance of Accommodation, Exercise and Enrichment, Control & Restraint, Feeding, Customer Care, Animal First Aid

Skills

You will put into practice, Legislation, Health & Safety, Maintenance of Accommodation, Exercise and Enrichment, Control & Restraint, Feeding, Customer Care, Animal First Aid

 

Behaviours

You will look at safe working, work ethic, team work, responsibility, communication and professionalism

END POINT ASSESSMENT

Once you have completed your portfolio, Level 1 Functional Skills Maths and English, have undertaken Level 2 Functional Skills tests in English and Maths, and have completed a minimum of 12 months of training you will be able to move forward to take the End Point Assessment and complete your Apprenticeship, this could take up 18 months.

 



What qualifications (will I get)?

An intermediate Animal Care and Welfare Assistant Apprenticeship Level 2

Functional Skills: Apprentices without level 1 English and Maths will need to achieve this level and take the test for level 2 English and Maths prior to taking the end-point assessment

How will I be assessed?

By an End Point Assessment (EPA) this is series of tests an apprentice must take to prove their ability to do the job they have been training for. These tests take place at the end of an apprenticeship following a period of training and development often referred to as the 'on-programme' period.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need employment at a DART approved animal care establishment e.g. kennels, catteries, rescue centres or pet shops or zoo.

What can I do after this training course?

Students may find that this qualification helps them to progress in their present employment. They can also progress to the level 3 work based diploma (Advanced Apprenticeship) provided that they meet the entry criteria and have successfully completed their level 2 workbased programme.

Why did you choose an Apprenticeship?
I need to be earning but I wanted more education specific to animal Care. I prefer being able to see and apply new learning first hand as it helps me truly understand what it is I'm learning.
 
What do you like about DART?
I like that im responsible for my own learning (when/where I do it) and that even so I feel like im always supported. I like the course layout; how things are organized and the tasks I've been set to date have been educational and interesting.
 
How has the apprenticeship helped/ developed you so far.
It is helping me gain knowledge on my job and the area im interested in. Therefore, making me better at my job with every new topic. It's helped me ensure im performing tasks safely and efficiently.
