What will I study?

This course combines knowledge and practical work with employment experience. The course reflects the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in Sports Turf (Groundsman).

What will be covered?

Mandatory Units

  • Monitor and maintain health and safety
  • Maintain and develop personal performance
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with others
  • Prepare ground for seeding and planting
  • Establish plants and/or seeds in soil
  • Maintain the health of sports turf
  • Maintain the condition of sports turf surfaces
  • Renovate and repair sports surfaces
  • Use and maintain non-powered and hand-held powered tools and equipment
  • Use and maintain pedestrian controlled powered equipment

Optional Units - Examples (these are chosen by your assessor and employer)

  • Load and unload physical resources within the work area
  • Transport physical resources within the work area
  • Maintain equipment and machines
What qualification (will I get)?

Intermediate Apprenticeship  including: Level 2 Work based Diploma in Horticulture (Sports Turf - Groundsman)
Functional Maths and English Level 1

How will I be assessed?

Assessments are of a practical nature and are carried out throughout the course. The underpinning knowledge is also assessed. This can be done by a range of methods including written and verbal assessment.

Horticulture' covers a wide range of activities and involves the undertaking of practical tasks.  There is an expectation that learners will have a reasonable level of fitness.  If a learner is in any doubt about the course details, they should discuss their concerns with the course tutor before they enrol.

What can I do after this training course?

Students may find that this qualification helps them to progress in their present employment. They can also progress to the level 3 work based diploma (Advanced Apprenticeship) provided that they meet the entry criteria and have successfully completed their level 2 workbased programme.
