What will I study?

This course combines knowledge and practical work with employment experience. The course reflects the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in Sports Turf (Groundsman).

What will be covered?

Mandatory Units

  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security of the workplace
  • Estimate and programme resource requirements
  • Manage your own resources
  • Set and mark out landscape sites to establish grassed and planted areas
  • Evaluate ground and environmental conditions to establish grassed and planted areas
  • Prepare sites for soft landscape establishment
  • Establish grass swards
  • Plan the maintenance, repair and renovation of sports turf areas
  • Plan and set out sports areas
  • Maintain drainage systems
  • Maintain irrigation systems
  • Manage information for action

Optional Units - Examples (these are chosen by your assessor and employer)

  • Design and install drainage
  • Prepare for and maintain equipment and machines
  • Safe use and application of pesticides
  • Conduct and report on a field survey for habitat types.
What qualification (will I get)?

Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 Work Based Diploma in Horticulture (Sports Turf - Groundsman)

Functional Maths and English Level 2

How will I be assessed?

Assessments are of a practical nature and are carried out throughout the course. The underpinning knowledge is also assessed. This can be done by a range of methods including written and verbal assessment.

Horticulture' covers a wide range of activities and involves the undertaking of practical tasks.  There is an expectation that learners will have a reasonable level of fitness.  If a learner is in any doubt about the course details, they should discuss their concerns with the course tutor before they enrol.

What can I do after this training course?

You can progress onto Higher Level Apprenticeships or a Foundation Degree.
