Horticulture or Landscape Operative

Learners can gain a level 2 or level 3 Standard in Horticulture or Landscape. Study programmes are also available at level 1 & level 2.

What is the job role?

Horticulture and Landscape Operatives can be employed to work in public parks and gardens, green spaces and historic gardens, private gardens and estates or in production nurseries and retail outlets. Many businesses will be specialised in their activities, such as grounds maintenance (soft-landscape) or landscape construction (hard-landscape).

What will I learn?

Depending on the programme route taken, an apprentice will learn how to carry out a range of practical tasks to support learning including:
+ Constructing fences & hard surfaces
+ Maintaining amenity turf
+ Planting
+ Pruning
+ Using & maintaining machinery
+ Health & safety
+ Developing decorative amenity areas
+ Propagation
+ Tractor operation
+ Creating water features

Length of apprenticeship

The typical duration for this apprenticeship is 24 months.

Core qualifications:

The following qualifications will be required prior to taking the end point assessment.

  • Emergency first aid: Level 2 award in emergency first aid at work.
  • Pesticides: Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance OR Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry requirements will be determined by individual employers but typically by potential apprentices will have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grades 4-9 (including Maths, English and Science) or other equivalent vocational qualifications. Apprentices recruited without the above levels of qualifications will need to ensure they achieve level 1 in English and Maths as part of their apprenticeship.

What can I do after this apprenticeship?

This Apprenticeship prepares learners for jobs such as:
+ Garden centre worker
+ Nursery worker
+ Grounds maintenance worker
+ Interior landscaper

Successful apprentices will have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level apprenticeship standard.

Job opportunities will also be enhanced for those apprentices who have completed the programme with promotion to more senior positions within the industry.
