Daniel Glover, who is a Groundsman at Derby County Football Club, has recently achieved a Merit in his Sports Turf Operative Standard Apprenticeship, despite his course being disrupted and extended due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Congratulations to Daniel on completing his apprenticeship and persevering with his studies through the tough year!
What are your day to day duties?
- Cutting pitches with ride on and pedestrian mowers
- Top dressing
- General pitch maintenance
What new skills have you learnt during your apprenticeship?
“I have learnt about how much time and effort goes into pitches on a day to day basis and the challenges that come with it. I enjoy working in an outdoor environment, I love the feeling of freedom when working.”
What are your future aspirations?
“Personally, I would like to stay within the industry in some shape or form, whether that is football or grounds related work. I would like to progress further, whether it is using my knowledge in football or to take it somewhere else in the industry. If I stay in football, I would like to do my Level 3 and get my spraying licence.”
Do you have any advice for future apprentices?
“Make sure you are on the ball all the time. Focus on the questions you must answer online. Once those are complete you can focus on the job in hand and learn whilst physically doing the job. It is the best way! Revise those identifications all the time, I cannot stress the importance of this!”
